ROTARY ROUND-UP: Busy times ahead as festive season begins
This week, Kim Woodley, from the Rotary Club of Worthing, gives an update on the latest and future goings-on.
Worthing Rotary Club is holding a fabulous variety concert raising funds for West Sussex Young Carers and Superstar Arts tomorrow (November 12) at The Salvation Army Citadel, Crescent Road, Worthing.
The concert will include talented performers from Worthing comprising male voice choir The Gruffs, junior and senior groups from the Regnante School of Performing Arts, ukulele band Wukulele, the Salvation Army Band, soloists in song and on the piano, plus a monologue or two.
MP for Worthing West Sir Peter Bottomley and his wife Virginia are taking part, with East Worthing & Shoreham MP Tim Loughton acting as the compere.
Our town crier, Bob Smytherman, will also be attending.
Do come and join us and help support these two very worthwhile Superstar Arts and West Sussex Young Carers.
The concert starts at 7pm and tickets are just £10 – email: [email protected] or call Kim on 07941 181601 to book.
We are also launching a new competition for the youth of Worthing.
Rotary Youth Speaks is a competition designed to support and encourage the development of effective communication skills in young people:
The competition is open to all schools and college communities including those that are home educated and any other young people’s community organisations.
Each team will have three students in full-time education in two age groups: intermediate (11 to 13 years) and senior (14 to 17 years).
Each team member takes on one of three roles: chairperson, speaker and vote of thanks
There will be an allocated a time in which to perform their role.
The local round will be held on Monday, November 21, at Lancing Prep, Broadwater Road, and the winners will go forward to the district round followed by an area round and a national final.
A cup will be presented to the winning teams and prizes given to all the winning team members.
Christmas is also very much on our minds as we prepare to open our Christmas tree collections in the town centre on Thursday, December 1, at 10.30am.
The mayor will start the proceedings accompanied by carol singers and music.
We will then have collectors at the tree from 11am until 3pm every day until Christmas Eve.
Come and see us and donate a few pence – or more!
All proceeds go towards the Salvation Army food parcels and other great local causes.
