ROTARY ROUND-UP: Packed programme to kick-start the year

West Worthing Rotary Club has kicked off 2016 with a packed programme of interesting and enjoyable activities and looks forward to a varied and full programme of events in the coming year.

January saw a ten-pin bowling evening followed by a good meal at Casa Ciro on the seafront.

Bowlers were also active at a skittles evening at the Black Horse, Findon, where the Worthing club invited the other two Worthing clubs to pit their skills against them.

West Worthing came out the victors with a promised re-match in three months.

The club has also enjoyed some interesting presentations at their weekly meetings on Tuesday evenings at the Tudor Close Pub in Ferring.

Local historian Steve Webbe gave a fascinating insight into the link between Ferring and the Prince of Wales, later to become Edward VIII, and remembered for his abdication

Long before these events the then Prince of Wales had a romance with a Freda Dudley, whom he met during an air raid in 1918, when both were just 23.

In 1928 the Prince and Freda spent six weeks holidaying in Ferring, this being his second and last visit.

While he was here he played at the Worthing Golf Club and took walks along Goring Beach, chatting to local folk.

Shortly after this they parted and soon after he met Wallace Simpson and the rest is, as they say, history.

Rotarians have also enjoyed talks from fellow members on their own lives.

Rotarian John Bayley, as a local architect, gave some fascinating insights illustrating his role in developing local buildings throughout his career with the local authority and in private practice.

Rotarian Al Frostick fascinated members with his illustration of the wide range of experiences in his 30-year career in the RAF, flying Tornados and being deployed on numerous exercises around the world including the Operation Desert Storm in Iraq.

Club members also attended the recent Holocaust Day Commemoration and joined other Worthing citizens to show respect for all the victims of genocides, and to seek to ensure the horrendous crimes of racism and victimisation are not forgotten or repeated.

The day was marked by a multi-faith event at Broadwater Manor, Lancing College Prep School.

Later wreaths were laid at the Holocaust Memorial tree in Beach House Park and those attending were invited to leave messages on the Tree of Remembrance.

West Worthing Rotary Club president Sue Virgo said: “It is so important to ensure these events are remembered. It is sad that such cruelties continue in the world and we must do what we can to prevent them happening again.”

West Worthing Rotary Club invites you to a fun Race Night.

Enjoy all the fun of the races on Friday, March 4, to be held at St Mary Church Hall, Ilex Way, at 7pm for 7.30pm.

The cost is £12.50 which includes a fish and chip supper and dessert with a licensed bar.

There are also opportunities to sponsor horses and races to win more prizes.

Proceeds raised on the night will be donated to the Worthing Women’s Aid (Safe in Sussex) and other charitable causes supported by Rotary.
