ROTARY ROUND-UP: Rotary celebrates its anniversary by raising money for campaign to end polio

Do we love a party? Do we have a reason? On Thursday Rotary turned 112!

Many clubs and districts have events planned in the coming months to celebrate Rotary’s anniversary, and the theme for this year’s celebration is Purple4Polio.

Fundraising is always a part of our celebrations and tea parties, and no birthday is complete without a party to celebrate – and what a perfect way to bring the community together through a tea party complete with jam and cake.

We will celebrate with our Rotary Jumble Sale in Lancing next month, with a break for tea and jam to mark Rotary’s birthday and celebrate a historic milestone in Rotary’s history and its dramatic success in the ongoing campaign to rid the world of polio.

As part of the Purple4Polio campaign Wilkin & Sons (Tiptree jam) has given 52,000 specially-branded jars of plum and greengage Purple4Polio jam to clubs for the tea parties.

Once empty, clubs will use the jars to collect spare change with the aim of raising £1million.

Typhoo Tea has provided boxes of Purple4Polio branded teabags and disposable mugs to enjoy during the event.

West Worthing Rotary Club ran a charity evening at Hove Greyhound Stadium to celebrate the birthday and raise money for our local charities.

Other clubs have many events planned; some have already held events.

In Guernsey the Lieutenant-Governor, Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder and Lady Corder turned purple to highlight the annual Purple Pinkie Day to raise awareness and funds for Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign.

In the Isle of Man public buildings will bathed in Purple light, a great way to mark Rotary Day and to highlight Rotary’s Purple4Polio programme to help end polio now and forever.

The Purple4Polio campaign was launched by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland to raise funds and awareness of the deadly disease, which is now on the brink of eradication.

The amount of polio-endemic countries has dropped from 125 to just two, with more than 2.5 billion children receiving vaccinations thanks to the help of Rotary.
