ROTARY ROUND-UP: Students from the Lavinia Norfolk Centre win Rotary awards

Three outstanding students from the Lavinia Norfolk Centre at Angmering High School were selected to receive the Tony Moore Award which is given to those students who demonstrate drive and initiative in their schoolwork, and above all make exceptional progress towards independence.

All these students have overcome considerable disabilities to win places to continue their education.

Thea Rae Reynolds will be continuing her education at Northbrook College, where she will study digital arts.

Lucie Hanks has a place at Chichester College to do a course in early years education and care.

Matt Francis has yet to select which university he will be going to, but he already has assured places to study law.

The Tony Moore Awards have motivated students since 1981 when they were initiated by Rotarian Tony Moore as part of his year as district governor.

He has attended every presentation over the past 35 years, but could not be there this year because of health problems.

The Lavinia Norfolk Centre is a specialist support facility for students with a physical, medical or sensory impairment.

It is a unique facility, recognised both at county and national levels as a centre of excellence and expertise, especially in the areas of physical disability, visual and learning impairment, autism and students with social and communication difficulties.

Presentations were made by Sue Virgo, immediate past president, supported by Rotarians Charles Pressley, Julia Frostick and David Chapman.

Head of the Lavinia Norfolk Centre, Mark Andrews, thanked the West Worthing Rotary Club on behalf of the students saying: “These awards are a powerful motivation for all students in the school and those who gain the awards provide a role model for all the other students.”

John Bayley, president of West Worthing Rotary, said: “We congratulate the students on their success and wish them well in their future studies and careers.”

Now is the time for your big summer clear out and to take advantage of West Worthing Rotary Club’s next big event, which is our annual Car Boot Sale.

It is to be held on Saturday, August 20, on Broadwater Green.

Sellers can arrive from 6am in the morning and it will close at midday.

Cars are £10 with MPV’s £12 and vans £15.

The event will raise money for Rotary charities.
