ROTARY ROUND-UP: Tim brings back gold from Russia

Tim Hayes, a former pupil at Angmering School, has won a gold medal in the Boccia International Open Event in Moscow.

This event was an under-21’s international competition which took place over four days and was the fourth international at which Tim had competed.

Winning the gold was an amazing achievement and a very proud moment for Tim.

Two other Angmering School pupils, Lewis Hammans (Year 12) and Louis Saunders (Year 9), also competed.

Lewis reached the semi-finals and Louis achieved a silver medal.

In total the nine-strong England squad won one gold, two silvers and a bronze.

Boccia is a game similar to bowls and petanque that is designed to be played by athletes with severe disabilities such as cerebral palsy and is now a Paralympic sport played by over 50 countries.

The three competitors were supported by West Worthing Rotary Club as part of its continuing interest in the Lavinia Norfolk Centre at Angmering School.

The centre is a specialist support facility for students with a physical, medical or sensory impairment.

Through West Worthing Rotary Club the Tony Moore Awards are given to students who show exceptional progress towards independence.

It is a unique facility, recognised both at county and national level as a centre of excellence and expertise, especially in the areas of autism and students with social, behavioural and communication difficulties.

As well as playing in the Boccia games, the team were delighted with the opportunity to visit Russia.

They enjoyed a days sightseeing, visiting Moscow’s Red Square and the Kremlin.

They also had great fun at a celebration party organised by the Russians, making it a wonderful way to celebrate winning the medals.

Tim said: “This was a truly amazing achievement and a hugely proud moment for me. I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone at West Worthing Rotary for your fantastic support and extremely kind generosity, which played a huge role in my winning the gold medal. I also thank them for making it possible for me to visit such an interesting country as Russia.”

Louis and Lewis also thanked the club for their generosity and said: “We were both very proud to represent our country and enjoyed and learnt from the experience.”

John Bayley, president of West Worthing Rotary Club, said: “We are delighted to be in the position to support Tim in his endeavours and heartily congratulate him on his success. We are pleased to see that the team did so well in Moscow and enjoyed the hospitality of their Russian hosts.”
