This week, Kim Woodley, from the Rotary Club of Worthing, gives an update on the latest and future goings-on.

Worthing Rotary Club recently held a Youth Speaks competition designed to support and encourage the development of effective communication skills in young people.

Teams from Davison, Durrington High, Bohunt and The Sir Robert Woodard Academy took part in speaking about topics ranging from ‘Is fashion harmful to society?’ to ‘Are mobile phones society’s newest addiction?’.

The standard of presentations was extremely high and the speakers were not even fazed by quite searching questions from the mayoress, which had to be answered in two minutes.

Judges Bob Smytherman and Jeremy Tomlinson marked them on their presentation, effective use of their voice and expertise in their subject. Not easy skills for an adult, yet alone an 11 to 14 year old!

The teams comprised a chairman, the speaker and a vote of thanks.

The winning team for the intermediate section (11 to 13 year olds) was Durrington High School, while The Sir Robert Woodard Academy won in the seniors section (14 to 17 year olds).

The teams were presented with a cup from the mayoress and vouchers.

All competitors received a certificate with the winners going through to the next round in the Rotary District semi-final.

Christmas is now very much on our minds as we hold our Christmas tree collections in the town centre from 11am to 3pm every day until Christmas Eve.

Come and see us and donate a few pence – or more!

All proceeds go towards the Salvation Army food parcels and other local great causes.
