This week, Kim Woodley, from the Rotary Club of Worthing, gives an update on the latest and future goings-on.

Did you see the inspirational film Breathe?

It was on last week in Worthing and was based on a true story of a man who contracted polio and his wife who was determined he would not spend his life in hospital but would be able to travel and live his life outside the confines of an institution.

At the end of each showing of the film the Connaught kindly collected funds to help the Rotary campaign to End Polio.

One of the most life-changing actions that Rotary has achieved is the huge reduction in the number of cases of polio.

To ensure success in its campaign every pound that Rotary commits to polio eradication will be matched two-to-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – up to $35million a year until 2018.

If you missed donating to this life changing cause then please visit the End Polio website – www.endpolio.org – and make a donation.

Our next event will be the Youth Speaks competition at Bohunt School on Tuesday, November 28, at 7pm.

This is a public speaking competition for teams from our local schools and we are delighted to have five intermediate teams and three senior teams taking part.

They will be speaking about a wide variety of topics and, if last year’s is anything to go by, the standard of presentation will be extremely high.

Christmas is also now very much on our minds as we open our Christmas tree collections in the Montague Centre on Friday, December 1, at 10.30am.

The mayor will start the proceedings, accompanied by carol singers and music.

We will then have collectors at the tree from 11am to 3pm every day – 4pm at weekends – until Christmas Eve.

Come and see us and donate a few pence – or more!

All proceeds go towards the Salvation Army food parcels and other great local causes.

To join Rotarians in making a difference to the lives of others, both locally and internationally, have a look at our website: www.worthing-rotary.org, call us or come along to one of our Monday lunchtime meetings.

We would love to welcome you.
