ROTARY ROUND-UP: Fundraising, yes, but there is much more to Rotary clubs...

This week, Gerald Illsley, from the Rotary Club of Worthing Steyne, gives an update on the latest and future goings-on.

Rotary clubs are known for many good things they do in their local areas, and none more so than in Worthing, which has three clubs.

But it is not always about fundraising. Or club, the Rotary Club of Worthing Steyne – with its HQ at the Ardington Hotel – is smaller and we still actively support lots of local charities in Worthing and Lancing.

This spring, we have managed something quite different and a bit of a surprise to us.

With club members in our district competitions in teams for quiz teams, darts teams and ten-pin bowling teams, we are not too exhausted.

Our darts team has pushed through and we find ourselves ahead of our neighbouring Worthing Rotary clubs and we are in the darts final, against the Rotary Club of Godalming later this month, after beating the Rotary club of Sussex Vale from Burgess Hill. Yes we really do get about! We may not be champs or ready for local all-comers, and we do not want to make too much of this, but it’s a bit of a rarity for us. Just like our summer events. One is a special afternoon for the creative types with the flower arranging event of the season at Field Place in Worthing, from 2.30pm on June 18. Tickets, which will include refreshments, and full details are available from club member Jim Farley – telephone 07768 9437250.

Another date for the diary is this year’s very spectacular Rotary Carnival, a three-day event over the August bank holiday weekend.

Lots of things to do and see, especially the carnival procession. Watch this space for more news.

And, in the meantime, later this month, members form the three local clubs will be travelling to Richebourg, in France, for a service of remembrance for the fallen of the Sussex Regiment in the Great War in the battle there. A sad loss and a special occasion.

So, there may be more to Rotary than you think.

Please come along to see us at the Ardington Hotel, in Worthing, any Monday evening and we can tell you more. Hope to see you.
