ROTARY ROUND-UP: Kick start the new year with Rotary

This week, Gerald Illsley, from the Rotary Club of Worthing Steyne, gives an update on the latest and future goings-on.

Worthing Steyne Rotary is small and successful, managing to raise funds to support local charities.

We also have hidden talents in other directions.

We kicked off the new year with some special wins for us, playing against other local Rotary clubs.

First it was a quiz, beating the Shoreham and Southwick Rotary Club, then a close second at skittles against Seaford Rotary, and now were taking on the Worthing Rotary Club tomorrow for a bit more skittles practice.

So two out of three and more to play for with the next round – quiz match against Arundel Rotary.

Perhaps not as exotic as Formula One or grand slam tennis, but a win is a win – as they say.

On Monday, February 15 all the competitions are forgotten and the three Rotary clubs in Worthing will meet up for our three-club dinner event.

Always special for us all, we are looking forward to meeting up.

Another special occasion for Worthing Steyne is planned in early April when we will have as our club guests some of this year’s group of Rotary Ambassadorial scholars – students who are in the UK to further their community and society studies through scholarships funded by Rotary.

We are always pleased to see them and hear what they are planning to tackle, then welcome them back later to hear how they are getting on.

This year we provide for study for one year in one of the 162 countries and 35 geographical regions where Rotary clubs are located.

Some 1,200 scholarships will be available from clubs worldwide.

During their studies abroad, Rotary scholars act as ambassadors of goodwill.

Through appearances before Rotary clubs and districts, schools, civic organisations and other forums, the scholars represent their homelands and work to further international understanding.

If you would like to hear more, why not come along and meet us on a Monday evening.

We have lots to look forward. Are you up for helping too?

Come along and see us at the Ardington Hotel at our headquarters and learn more about our club and Rotary. You will be very welcome.

Please phone ahead on 07788 638757 to let us know when you will be coming along.
