ROTARY ROUND-UP: Young people speak up for themselves

The Rotary Youth Speaks competition was an exciting event which was held in November last year with Worthing Rotary Club hosting the first round of the competition at Bohunt school.

Four local senior schools took part with Durrington High School winning the award for best intermediate team and the Sir Robert Woodard Academy winning the senior section.

The winners then entered the Rotary district semi-final and two weeks ago Durrington gave a very convincing talk on ‘should junk food be taxed?’

The standard here was extremely high but Durrington delivered another very confident and clear presentation which resulted in Mridul Shrestha winning the cup for the best speaker of the day in the intermediate section.

The senior district semi-final takes place this week.

Youth activities are a key part of our work and we are pleased to sponsor one or two young people to attend the Rotary Young Leaders Awards (RYLA) course each Easter, a fabulous five-day course based near Dorking.

The young people attending the course will be challenged to develop leadership skills, gain confidence and improve their problem solving and communication skills.

A visit to Chessington through the Rotary Kids Out project will give a group of disabled youngsters a fun-filled day out.

This will take place in June and we aim to take pupils from Palatine School on an all-expenses-paid day out.

Don’t forget to pop into our hobbies and leisure exhibition at the Charmandean Centre, Forest Road, BN14 9HS, on Saturday, March 3, from 10am to 4pm.

The exhibition will have many stalls and displays featuring local clubs and organisations with activities ranging from running and walking clubs to drama clubs, photography clubs, sewing and knitting groups.

Each table costs £17 with an extra table for just £13.

This event is a great opportunity to promote what you do and to encourage others to join you.
