Here at St Barnabas House we are very lucky to have such great facilities, including our fantastic art room.
We recently started a new art group, called Creative Space, for family and close friends of patients known to the hospice.
The group provides a supportive and safe place in which people can take time for themselves and express themselves creatively.
Taking place in our art room on Monday mornings, the group is open to anyone over the age of 19, including primary carers, occasional carers or someone who is otherwise part of the family or closely linked to one of our patients.
There are two groups and each group meets every other week for six weeks.
For each cycle of six sessions a theme is set and those taking part can choose to tackle the theme in any media they wish.
Sessions are not formally tutored, but tuition and support is available to those requiring it, relevant to their chosen media.
Creative activities provide a focus that group members can take in any direction they wish.
They might use the time to explore the situation they are in, or to escape from it.
The group offers a space in which people can be mindful of their own wellbeing and, by extension, perhaps the wellbeing of those they care about.
We hope the activity can empower participants through being positively engaged, productive, thinking creatively about problems and being mindful of their thoughts and feelings.
