The aim of the MoU is to enhance collaboration, communication and active support between Neighbourhood Watch and Sussex Police, supporting the three key priorities of the force’s operational delivery plan, these being:

• To keep communities safe and feeling safe, by promoting good citizenship, greater public awareness, a better understanding of crime trends and direct channels for police/community liaison.

• To identify and protect vulnerable people, by promoting public and community safety, resilience planning, quality of life and stronger community cohesion.

• To prevent and respond to harm by working to increase public participation to prevent, report, reduce and detect anti-social behaviour, crime and disorder, and by protecting, liaising with and supporting those who have been victims of crime. In supporting the priorities, both parties will apply the force’s six principles: integrity, trust, learning, technology and innovation, collaboration and partnership, and investment in their people.

Any additional points can be agreed at local level between the local NHW Associations and their Neighbourhood Policing Teams, such as items relating to meetings or communications.

Co-ordinators are also reminded to register their membership online at www.ourwatch.org.uk, to ensure that, should the post of co-ordinator fall vacant, the scheme will remain intact and the police will know where members are located in the event of emergencies and enquiries – this also has implications for national and local funding.
