TIM DREW: Be aware and stay safe this Hallowe'en

Hallowe'en will soon be here and many of us will looking forward to getting into the spooky spirit with 'trick or treating' being part of the fun.

While this may be harmless in its proper place, we do have to bear in mind that this will not be welcomed by those who are elderly or vulnerable and would rather not be disturbed on a dark evening in late October.

Also, sadly, the “killer clown” craze seems to have found its way to Worthing, so it is all the more important for those planning to celebrate the evening to take precautions so that they can both enjoy themselves and stay safe.

Neighbourhood Watch provides the following advice for a happy and neighbourly Hallowe’en:

• Children should always be accompanied by an adult – they should never be allowed to go trick or treating without an adult, no matter how large the group of children is.

• Only knock on doors where people are clearly celebrating Hallowe’en – look out for a jack-o’-lantern or some other obvious decoration. Some people even display “Trick or Treaters Welcome” signs.

• Never accept an invitation to go inside a stranger’s home.

• Tell children not to stroke pet dogs that come to the door.

• Respect “No Trick or Treat” signs and do not visit unlit houses.

• Make sure that you have a torch with a strong beam and can be easily seen.

• Be careful with lit candles and costumes.

• Remember to thank those who offer you treats.

Don’t forget that burglaries tend to spike around this time of year as the clocks go back, with opportunistic burglars looking for dark, empty homes to raid, so make your home look as though there is somebody there when you go out.
