TIM DREW: Dates announced for crime awareness events

Crime statistics across the three categories covered by the Worthing Neighbourhood Policing Team's weekly bulletins show that the total number of related offences was restricted to 22 across Worthing & Adur during the period from January 4 to 17.

The statistics show there were three reported incidents of burglary, eight of burglary other than from dwellings, and 11 of vehicle crime.

16 of these crimes were recorded in Worthing, four in Shoreham, and one in Lancing.

In ten of these cases, nothing was stolen but, in at least 12 cases, damage was caused in attempts to gain access to properties or vehicles.

Lawnmowers in particular were targeted during this period, with three being stolen.

Dates for the Worthing Neighbourhood Watch and Crime Awareness Events have been arranged, and these will take place between 10am and 4pm at South Street Square on the following Saturdays: April 30, May 28, July 2, August 6, August 27 and September 24.

Meanwhile, the amalgamation of Horsham with Adur & Worthing to form the largest policing “hub” in Sussex will also have important implications for Neighbourhood Watch, because adopting the same “borderless” approach asthe police is expected to result in enhanced benefits all round.

One idea under consideration involves the utilisation by Sussex Police of NHW volunteers to give talks on crime prevention, which would alleviate pressure on PCSOs and Crime Prevention Officers.

PCSO Sally Haggis will be available for a chat between midday and 12.30pm outside Gala Bingo, Plaza Parade, Rowlands Road, on Tuesday.

On Wednesday there are two Ward Neighbourhood Panel Meetings – Castle Ward between 7pm and 8pm at St Richard’s Church, Collingwood Road; and Goring Ward between 7pm and 8pm at Worthing Leisure Centre, Shaftesbury Avenue.
