TIM DREW: Police urge householders to secure outbuildings

It is pleasing to report that the total number of offences across three categories '“ burglary (four), burglary other than from dwellings (ten) and vehicle crime (16) '“ was restricted to 30 across Worthing and Adur during the period from December 21 to January 3.

15 of these crimes were recorded in Worthing, seven in Shoreham, four in Lancing, three in Southwick and one in Portslade.

That nothing was stolen in 19 of these cases is also welcome news at a peak time for criminal activity.

On 15 occasions, force was used to gain access, shed locks being forced twice.

As usual, bicycles were targeted (four thefts recorded) as well as power tools (three successful or attempted offences).

The police are urging householders to secure their outbuildings using good quality padlocks (“Sold Secure” products, which are police approved, are strongly recommended) and both to secure equipment to strong-points (such as ground anchors) where possible and to fit alarms.

Make sure that the outbuilding doors are robust, too, because on one occasion the thieves succeeded in accessing a garage by bending the door.

Don’t forget to register your valuables with Immobilise, the national property register used by police forces nationwide, and to mark them using synthetic DNA or via microdot-related means such as Smartwater or Alpha Dot.

Meanwhile, the Cyber Streetwise Password Campaign is encouraging people to choose three random words for their passwords from the things that they see and experience.

By this means, they should be able to create a strong password which, moreover, they are not likely to forget.
