TIM DREW: Sponsor offers potential to increase coverage

Neighbourhood Watch has this month secured both a new primary sponsor, and what promises to be an important partner in the task of creating stronger and safer communities, in The Co-operative Insurance.

The agreement will initially last 12 months and The Co-operative Insurance will fund the printing of new window stickers and a new guide for Neighbourhood Watch members.

Neighbourhood Watch currently has over 173,000 co-ordinators covering 3.8 million households across England and Wales and The Co-operative organisation overall has nearly five million members, so the scale of the two groups combined will give them the potential to reach out to a significant percentage of the population.

As a result, Neighbourhood Watch is targeting the creation of 30,000 new schemes and will also seek to achieve a presence in communities where it is not currently represented.

Meanwhile, another sponsor, Avocet Hardware, has launched a new product – the AIM Forensics Security System – which is already recognised by five police forces.

It takes the form of a traditional door chain which is linked to a high-decibel alarm and a canister of DNA forensic spray which are both contained in a high-tech housing. If the door is struck with sufficient force, the system simultaneously emits an alarm and sprays the burglar with a liquid containing UV-based DNA tracing technology.

This liquid will remain on skin and clothes for weeks, and is registered at the point of installation, so is unique to that specific address and door.

There are no neighbourhood panels or surgeries this week, but a briefing by Acting Superintendent Howard Hodges on changes to local policing and the current state of progress with the Local Policing Programme (aimed at Neighbourhood Watch among others), will take place at 7pm on Wednesday at the Police Training Rooms at Centenary House, Durrington Lane.
