TIM DREW: Successful year for scheme and its associates

As we approach the end of 2016, this marks an appropriate point at which to take stock of the achievements of Worthing Neighbourhood Watch and its associates during the year.

Worthing Neighbourhood Watch held five crime awareness events in the town centre, at which a large number of cycles were marked and literature distributed.

NHW’s focus on preventing crime and abating the fear of crime remain unchanged, as does the objective of helping to create safer and more resilient communities and our ambition is still the establishment of a NHW scheme in every street.

As Terry Rickards said at the October AGM, the NHW roundel is a strong brand but will not in itself stop crime, so people need to be encouraged to start schemes and to do the best job that they can in their area – this includes keeping an eye on vulnerable neighbours and reporting suspicious and criminal behaviour to the police every time.

The West Downs Neighbourhood Watch Task force has provided stewarding and marshalling services at no less than 55 events since July 2015, including the Night to Remember in aid of St Barnabas House, the Worthing Rotary Carnival, the public meeting on the improvement of the A27 at the Pavilion, the Littlehampton Bonfire Society event and the Adur Sea of Lights festival, with a lot of “repeat business” being won.

SpeedWatch reported that 1,100 motorists had been caught speeding over 172 sessions, and 5.600 motorists had been sent letters by the police, with 12 multiple offenders identified.

Thankfully, most motorists do stick to the rules, but the 1.5 per cent who are offending need to be identified.
