Visitors'“ be responsible

Regarding the recent outbreak of infections and with the tragic fatal consequences in hospitals, whilst we are all quick to point the finger of blame at nurses and doctors, and possibly inadequate cleaning, do visitors ever really stop to consider the harm they themselves are doing?

We expect nurses not to travel to and from hospital in their uniforms, yet visitors to hospital routinely arrive in clothes infected with goodness knows what and then sit on the patient's bed!

I was horrified when my son was in hospital with a compound (i.e. open wound) fracture, to see visitors on the ward, with patients who had similar injuries, sitting on the patients' beds, and the ward staff never did anything to prevent them.

All the germs on their clothes then had a nice easy route up the blankets to an open wound.

I think it is time visiting was back to restricted hours, two visitors to a patient, and to be told to sit on the chairs provided, not the beds.
