Wash service cut

I AM writing to you in a matter which may be of interest to your readers.

In 2005, a service was set up by Worthing Borough Council offering a laundry service to those individuals with continence issues.

As of August 27, this service will be ending completely, with no explanation.

All that is on offer instead of this service is a 500 grant for a new industrial-sized machine, as the council is seeing the laundry service as a luxury due to adequate padding.

I am a full-time carer for my 86-year-old grandmother who has been diagnosed with dementia.

She is also a diabetic, has heart problems and, due to arthritis, has decreasing mobility.

Before this service was introduced to us, we were washing every day, with little or no chance of being able to see to my own washing needs, due to also having no facilities to be able to get the washing dry, and I am now despairing that this situation will be returning once more, as we appear to be getting back to the usual all or nothing.

Had we been asked, I am sure that many carers would have been willing to contribute towards the costs or in fact pay for this most valuable of services.

Wake up, Worthing Borough Council, and think of the options.
