World of Words: Creative writing group profiled: the Worthing Wordsmiths

FROM Chichester to Shoreham, from Littlehampton to Steyning, writing groups and reading circles have been writing in to let us know about their activities.

Would you like to get in touch with like-minded creative people in your area? Let us know what your group does and how it came to be set up, and we will be happy to profile you on this page. This week: the Worthing Wordsmiths.

The Worthing Wordsmiths originally started as The Chatsworth Forum. It was started by Robin Prieber (now sadly passed away), Kate Buller and Anthony Ward. Pamelia Long started with the group ten years ago. Robin asked Pamelia to help run the group and they decided to change the name.

They had a competition among the members and Lorretta Read-Golding’s name ‘The Worthing Wordsmiths’ won. Pamelia became the co-tutor with Robin seven years ago and then full tutor when he passed away.

To join the group, come along and find them every Wednesday afternoon at St Pauls Church café, in Chapel Road, Worthing, from 2pm to 4.30pm. There is a break at 3pm for coffee.

There is a small fee of £1 per person, towards the cost of the room. The group says: “We are open to anyone who wants to do creative writing.

“It is a fun group, not an educational one. We write short stories, poetry and creative writing games. The ages of our members range from 13 up to 90 years.

“We are accessible for disabled people. You don’t have to be a brilliant writer to join us, just have a love of writing. We have all levels of abilities in the group. We are a very friendly bunch and welcome newcomers.

“If you have any writing, bring it along so you can read some out in the group.

“We spend the first hour reading out what we have written during the week. We discuss any news to do with the group, such as competitions. The second half is spent doing the creative writing games.”

The group also has an internet radio show, which is recorded once a week. Readers are needed, and anyone who can help should email Pamelia: pamelialong@btinternet.com
