WORTHING LIONS: Lions pensioner abseils down Arundel Castle

Steve Coe, president of Worthing Lions Club, reports that one of its members, Peter Rixon (aged 73), recently abseiled down Arundel Castle in aid of Winston's Wish, a charity which supports bereaved children.

Fortunately it was a lovely sunny day, Lions provided the PA system and refreshments for volunteers and guests in the castle grounds.

All the participants had to climb 140 steps to get up to the top of the tower which is some 200ft above ground level.

When Peter was about to jump ‘Skyfall’ was played on the PA system, much to the amusement of the crowd watching below.

After the abseil was successfully completed Peter remarked that it had been a bit nerve-wracking looking over the top of the turret but once he had started the descent everything went very smoothly.

He was presented with two certificates, one from Winston’s Wish and a special award from Worthing Lions Club.

Leigh-Beth Stroud, from Winston’s Wish, said it had been a great day and thanked the 80 volunteers who took part in the event, for which the charity had already received several thousand pounds in donations.

Worthing Lions Club meets every second Thursday in Broadwater Community Centre, Broadwater Street West, Worthing, at 8pm.
