Over-limit biker banned after chase

Police were called when Darren Moore almost crashed his motorbike in the Southwick Tunnel, heading east on the A27 on December 4.

Officers pursued him down Dyke Road, Brighton, but Moore swerved around a patrol vehicle that tried to block him in at the junction with Highcroft Villas.

Moore, of Windermere Crescent, Worthing, was eventually caught in Reigate Road, Brighton, and arrested at 8.20pm before being charged with failing to stop for police and drink-driving.

A breathalyser recorded a reading of 152 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of his breath. The legal limit is 35.

He appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court last Friday and pleaded guilty to both charges. He was banned from driving for 36 months, ordered to do 200 hours’ community service and told to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

Afterwards, Superintendent Jane Derrick said: “Moore was already endangering himself and other motorists with his erratic driving on the A27 but made things even worse by trying to escape from the officers following him.

“Drink-driving is totally unacceptable and we will not tolerate it in any form. If you see someone driving who you think could have been drinking, please call us on 999 so that we can prevent other people being put in danger.”
