The project has seen the demolition of the old Timpsons shop on North Street, to create the new Hanningtons Lane, and revealing the historic 17th century Puget's Cottage which was hidden behind the store for 140 years.

Now work will begin on revamping Huntington House on North Street, giving it a cosmetic overhaul and installing a new sign to The Lanes.

New shop fronts will then be installed, with a new glazed frontage on the corner of Meeting House Lane.

Redevco started redeveloping the 1.3 acre site, which includes the former Hanningtons department store or ‘Harrods of Brighton’, in February.

Andrew Foulds, portfolio director at Redevco, said: “Our Masterplan approach should provide a catalyst for the whole area.

"We have also demolished a building at the rear of the site and reconfigured some existing space, but people should start to see significant investment and improvements over the next few months.

"Signage is incredibly important to retailers already on Meeting House Lane and beyond, so we are looking forward to getting larger, bolder and more permanent wayfinding signage installed as soon as possible.”

The new Hanningtons Estate’ development will combine larger stores fronting North Street, with smaller units in Hanningtons Lane, plus a small number of new apartments which will be available to rent.

Redevco has invested £72 million into the project, acquiring the majority of the city centre site in 2015 and an adjacent property at the end of last year.

Mr Foulds said: “The vision is to blend a visually unique and engaging scheme into the existing network of narrow alleyways, lanes, eclectic boutiques, restaurants and cafes/bars that already make Brighton so popular.”

He said the new Lane will host retailers that represent 'pioneering fashion, cutting edge art and inspiring food and produce’.

Redevco said retail units will be available as early as summer 2018 - from between 250 sq ft and 850 sq ft in the new Hanningtons Lane and 1,350 sq ft to 8,500 sq ft on North Street.
