Paralympic judo hero Ben inspires students at Angmering

YOUNG sporting leaders of tomorrow were given an inspirational talk by Paralympic judo hero, Ben Quilter, last Wednesday (January 23).

Students from The Angmering School had a chance to meet the former judo world champion and Paralympic bronze medallist during a special sporting leadership camp at the school.

Ben, who began losing his sight as a child after developing Stargardt’s disease – a degenerative eye condition – spoke to young people from years-nine to 12 about his Paralympic success.

He said: “The only way having a disability could hinder you is if you have the wrong attitude. If you have the right attitude you can achieve anything.

“I felt being visually impaired actually inspired me more to achieve more.”

The event, called Step into Sport, was aimed at forging better links between disabled and able-bodied students.

It was the first of its kind to be held at Angmering.

Alison Groves, school games organiser, arranged the day. She said: “This is part of the Youth Sports Trust. The scheme aimed to get children to understand everyone is different.

“We got them to adopt different forms of impairment to understand how challenging dealing with these can be.”
