PAUL O'BRIEN: Time to sort out parking on the seafront

While we may not have the sandy beaches of other shoreline towns we do offer unrivalled coastal views with a clean beach and prom area.

With investment in the Southern Pavilion, new plantings and signs, we now have a fabulous pier to offer visitors as well.

With the East Beach artists area, new swimming pool and splash pad all the way to the kid’s shark play park in the west, we sometimes take for granted just how long and unique our prom is.

However, there is one thing that has irked not only myself but many other traders for a good few years now, and that is the continued build up of cars parking just to the east of the Pavilion building.

Go down there on any given day and there can be more than 20 cars using this as a free car park. It brings the area down and really disrupts those small traders on the seafront.

This area was designed for unloading to the theatres when shows are on and there are spaces for four cars.

If this is what it was designed for then there would be no quarrels, but it simply isn’t the case anymore.

With the council now owning all the multi-storey car parks there is no reason that permits can’t be given for the bowling alley parking to those that need to park near.

We have been told before that it is for staff safety when leaving venues late in the evening – and I’m sure nobody would have any problems with staff parking after 6pm – but almost all of the cars are gone by 5pm.

If we want to have a truly great promenade then somebody needs to take a good look into this blight on our seafront.
