Pebsham residents call for air quality survey

PEBSHAM residents who complain of continuing stench and odours from the new Southern Water Waste Treatment Plant are demanding a thorough air quality survey.

The Pebsham Residents Action Group (PRAG) has carried out a survey of hundreds of residents revealing a number of illnesses and ailments which they blame on foul smells emanating from the plant.

Of some 500 residents questioned around 350 complained they regularly pick-up the smells from the plant.

They are disappointed with Rother District Council environmental health officers' response to their complaints and say a more thorough job should be done to identify the problem.

In an open letter to local authorities, doctors, Southern Water and the MP, PRAG chairman Ken Paterson says: "We require a thorough air quality check in the Filsham Drive/Top Cross Road area.

If this is technically difficult can you please let us know who has the experience to do it?

In view of the health problems shown by residents in completing our questionnaire, their constant visits to local GPs and hospital consultants, do we have your assurance there is not a health problem in this area?

"It is up to council officers, on our behalf, to identify the problem and cure it."

Residents say the problem has been going on since testing started at the plant six months ago.

A Southern Water spokesperson said: "We are aware of the issues affecting the area surrounding the Bexhill and Hastings Wastewater Treatment Works and the company is working closely with the local council and the Environment Agency to address the problems.

"The works are equipped with specific measures to control smells including a specialist odour control plant and it is Southern Water's intention that when complete, the works will operate without causing nuisance to the residents in the area.

"The works is currently in the testing and commissioning phase and some technical problems have resulted in intermittent odours. Southern Water and its contractors are working hard to minimise these problems and a detailed investigation into odour control issues is currently being conducted.

"Southern Water apologises for the inconvenience caused during this period. The company's main concern is with the well being of those living around the area and working at the site."
