Protesters will be gathering on the closed Madeira Drive road by Brighton Pier from 1pm on June 13 in a stand against racism.

Organisers say it is aimed to ‘show solidarity to all BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of colour) communities who continuously and tirelessly have their human rights challenged and fear dangerous oppression from authorities and governments alike’.

Thousands of people have signed up to the event on Facebook, and protestors are being told to stick to social distancing rules, keeping two metres apart.

The event is described as a ‘peaceful silent protest’ with no chanting or shouting and people or told not to group together.

They are also encouraged to wear face masks and bring banners.

It comes after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis sparked a surge of protests across the globe.

A white police officer has been charged with the murder of Mr Floyd, who was black, after a video emerged of him kneeling on his neck for almost nine minutes.

In the viral video, Mr Floyd can repeatedly be heard saying ‘I can’t breathe’. He died in police custody.

The fallout from this racially aggravated event has been far reaching, with dramatic clashes between police forces and protestors across many American cities over the past week.

Anti-racist demonstrations have been seen in countries across the world, despite much of the planet still under some form of lockdown from coronavirus.
