COMMUNITY AWARDS: Two weeks to vote

The Observer has been flooded with names after we announced the nominations deadline for our annual Community Awards would close on September 15.

But so many people have contacted since it has been decided to extend the deadline to Friday, October 14 so everyone can get their nominations in to us.

Among the nominees is athlete Jamie Moore, who has been nominated in our Sportsperson of the Year and Best Youth categories.

A pupil at The Regis School, Jamie has just earned his place in regional qualifying. He has just completed his third decathlon with bests in shot and discus, and solid results in high jump, javelin, hurdles and the pole vault. At just 17, he has a bright sporting future ahead of him.

As always, one of the most popular categories in our awards is the Shirley Henry Award for Best Volunteer, and with 17 different awards, there is a category to match every single person who has contributed to their community.

Observer series editor Colin Channon said: “We have been overwhelmed with entries over the last few days and we thought it only fair to give people extra time to get their nominations to us.

“There are so many good people out there – this is the perfect chance to recognise their work.”
