The charity, founded by Jan Sheward, works from Worthing to Chichester, supporting people whose lives have been affected by cancer.

The gym, in the grounds of Millfield House, Station Road, was the first of its kind in the country, being dedicated to helping cancer patients on their path to recovery.

Jan said: “On October 16, it will be five years since the then MP for Arundel and South Downs, Nick Herbert, opened the gym. CU Fitter is a very special place where people come together to share their experiences through exercise and physical activity.

“Since 2015, the specialist cancer trainers who have worked in the gym, headed up by lead instructor Dwayne Clevett, have helped hundred of cancer patients through their treatment and on to becoming much stronger and fitter.”

OutRunCancer, funded by Active Sussex, launches on Monday, October 19, to mark the gym’s fifth birthday.

Members will be going into the gym to take turns on static bikes, riding for 20 minutes and 15 seconds, in honour of the 2015 date, from Monday to Friday next week.

The aim is to raise £1,000. Visit www.goldengiving.com/fundraising-team/outcyclecancerchallenge to make a donation.

It took two years to raise the £45,000 needed to complete the project and Jan donated land on her own property to see it to fruition.

She said at the launch the gym would ‘bring about extraordinary changes to the physical fitness and mental wellbeing of many cancer patients’.

The charity recently benefited from two special coronavirus-related donations, at a time when it has lost about 65 per cent of its usual income.
