Jodie Hart was out with her family on the beach near their home when they came across the monster of the deep, which she said was around the size of a football.

"It was like aliens had landed," said Jodie, who was with her nine-year-old son, Sid.

"It was huge - the biggest I've ever seen in England. I've seen them that size in Australia, but never here."

Jodie said she had nicknamed her son Sid the Squid because she usually could not keep him out of the water, but last Tuesday's (July 21) encounter had made him slightly wary of the water.

Although amazed, the discovery of the gelatinous beast had him asking his mum whether there were also sharks in the water, having lived in Australia and become accustomed to more exotic, dangerous sea creatures.

Thankfully, there are far fewer dangerous monsters in Worthing's waters than down under.
