Den Jarvis, 74, has worked behind the counter of Rowlands Pharmacy in North Road for 53 years after first taking up the post as a fresh-faced 21-year-old.

Since then Den has become a pillar of the community, serving generations of families and endearing himself to his ‘young ladies’ of all ages.

After dedicating the best part of his life to the chemist, Den said it was a difficult decision to say goodbye to the job he loved.

“I said I would stop after 50 yeras, but now I’ve decided it’s the right time to give up and stay home,” said Den, who has been off work since March after undergoing major surgery.

“I’ve met so many people, I always liked talking to them and they have obviously been happy to talk to me.

“Because there are people who come here all the time, they know they can come in and have a chat if they want to.

“I’ve grown up with them as friends and with their families.”

Den spent his final day in the shop on Friday (October 16), saying goodbye to old customers and being presented with keepsakes by his children and senior pharmacy staff.

Now the father-of-two plans to spend more time with his wife and six grandchildren, while using his well-earned free time to get into woodworking.
