Musician Nik Holland made quite an occasion of it at his park home off Rope Walk, putting up balloons and banners, and providing wine and canapés.

Nik, who is known as the guitarist in an Elvis tribute band that regularly played at Butlin’s in Bognor Regis, said he did it to give people a laugh.

He has lived in his park home since November 2012 and over the years has replaced pretty much everything, right down to a whole new floor.

Nik said: “Shaun cut the ribbon to herald a new era in delivering letters, after the ‘death trap’ wooden step to my park home was replaced with a three-step, brick-built, sturdy affair.

“Happy days have now ensued and the brand-new concrete and brick step is here to stay. I couldn’t have replaced the step without the help of my friend Ryan. I designed the structure and he built it for me.”

Nik said he had initially planned to replace the old step with a new wooden structure and Shaun had joked that he would cut the ribbon to open it when it was finished.

In the end, it was decided a brick step would be more stable and long-lasting, and with the help of his friend, Nik had it completed.

Shaun quipped: “Fortunately, I am tall, so posting letters to the Kandy Park address didn’t pose too much of a problem.

“However, I daren’t step on to the old rickety wooden step for fear of my foot going straight through the rotten wood.”

Nik, who used to work at Coral in Rustington, said he hoped the story of the opening of a step would make people laugh.
