Shelves at Waitrose, High Street remained stocked with vegan and vegetarian meat substitutes which had been recalled on February 10 due to an issue with the best before dates.

The ‘THIS’ products had been incorrectly labelled with a best before date two years in the future, February 12 2022, when the products actually expired on Wednesday (February 12).

Meat substitutes included in the recall are This Isn’t Chicken Plant Based Sea Salt & Black Pepper 190g, This Isn’t Chicken Plant Based Goujons with Breadcrumbs 230g, and This Isn’t Chicken Plant Based Tikka Pieces 140g.

Customers could still pick the products up in store until Sunday (February 16) but would not have been able to purchase them at the checkout.

A Waitrose spokesperson said: “I would like to assure that we have thorough procedures in place to prevent things like this happening however something has clearly gone wrong on this occasion and I have now discussed this with the branch management team who will investigate this fully with the Partners responsible for this section.

“As an additional measure when any product is recalled our till system also receives a notification and this will prevent the sale from being made.”

A notice has now been displayed on the shelves and all recalled products have been removed.

A THIS spokesperson confirmed that the date stamp error only affected Waitrose and the products were safe to eat as long as they were within the best before date.

More information about this, and other recalls, can be found at the Waitrose website.
