Roadworks to start today on major A24 junction

Drivers are being warned that preliminary works at the Robin Hood roundabout will start todfay (October 19) and will last around six weeks.

Lane closures will be in place along with temporary traffic lights and a 50mph speed limit imposed.

West Sussex County Council says the works are aimed at cutting congestion in the area.

The preliminary works will include vegetation clearance, drainage work and the diversion of utility equipment.

There will be off-peak lane closures on all four roads approaching the roundabout.

A county council spokesman said: “Every effort will be made to limit inconvenience during the works but there will be some disruption, for which we apologise.

“Road users are advised to please allow extra time for their journeys.”

The main phase of the scheme is expected to start in mid-spring 2021.

Road widening will then allow for increased traffic generated by local developments over the last decade.

The county council says a new traffic-light system will help manage flows in peak and off-peak periods and there will also be improvements for both pedestrians and cyclists.

The scheme will widen the A24 southbound from two lanes to four; widen the A24 northbound from two lanes to three; widen the exit from Warnham Road on to the roundabout; Introduce traffic-light control on the A24 approaches to the roundabout and on the Warnham Road; Introduce a ‘Toucan’ crossing across the northbound exit of the A24 (towards A24 Great Daux);Improve the footway and cycleway connection from Warnham Road to Robin Hood Lane and the Public Right of Way.

Funding for the £3.7 million scheme is coming from planning contributions from local development.

The works are being undertaken by Landbuild on behalf of the county council.
