Rogate sunflower fields open: in pictures

We sent our photographer along to a Rogate farm as it opens it's pick-your-own sunflower field today (Thursday, July 30).

The family-run business is holding a pick-your-own sunflowers event, open from today (Thursday), with hopes of encouraging children to spend time outdoors. Sophie Davey, who runs Slade Farm with her husband Pete, said: “We would normally do the sweetcorn festival but we just can’t have read how it was going to he this summer. If we were to do anything it would have to be low-key. We really are very passionate about getting children outside. We couldn’t be more blessed with the weather forecast for our opening. I think we could have opened last week but we weren’t prepared.” They decided sunflowers would be a safer option and so planted four varieties for people to come along and pick for themselves. “I am hoping lots of people come along but you just never know. We will be abiding by the guidelines and all the social distancing measures.” Also at the opening will be a vintage VW van serving tea and coffee, a delicatessen and snacks. Entry is free. Tickets are £5 to pick six sunflowers. Visitors are asked to bring their own secateurs.
