Rustington Class of 2020 donates leavers’ party money to charity

An end-of-year swimming party at Arundel Lido had been long planned but it had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Organiser Tamsin Netherwood said: “Just over half of the 90 pupils paid towards this. Sadly, due to the current circumstances this amazing evening was not to be.

“Instead of everyone having a refund, nearly all contributed their money to be equally donated to three local charities, all important charities for individual reasons.

“They couldn’t have their party but they deserve some recognition for this wonderful kindness.”

The Elder, Beech and Cherry classes were able to donate £180 each to Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice, Safe in Sussex and Arundel Lido.

Teachers said they were ‘saddened and disappointed’ that the children were not able to return to school this summer and it was upsetting for the children not to be able to finish their time at Summerlea properly.

A virtual leavers’ assembly was held during the final week of term, including video messages from the staff and an award ceremony.

The year-six team is planning a Class of 2020 reunion to get the whole year group back together at the school, once social distancing restrictions have been lifted.

Head teacher Helen Morris, in a letter to parents, said: “I am incredibly sad not to have been able to give year six the send off they truly deserve as they finish their time at primary school and transition to secondary.

“However, we can’t wait to welcome them back as soon as it is safe to do so in the new academic year so that we can say a proper goodbye.”
