Shoreham early summer show ‘great success’ after going virtual

People from far and wide took part in the judging, giving their votes in 26 different classes.

Daphne Thomas, show secretary, said: “Although we had to condense the summer show schedule, with fewer classes, it still proved to be a great success, receiving more than 1,200 online votes, ranging from the north of England to the east.”

The winner with overall points was Jenny Hughes, with Gordon Cooper in second place and Ted Banks third.

Some beautiful, bright hanging baskets were produced, with Ann Cox taking first place, and other floral categories included dahlias, gladiolus, fuchsias, roses and pelargonium.

There were many quality fruit and vegetables on display including onions, potatoes, carrots and French beans.

Ted Banks produced a runner bean measuring about 40cm to win the longest runner bean, with Ann Cox in second for her 36cm entry.

Gill Robbins won first prize in the two floral art categories, with the arrangements on the themes Carry on Camping and Buckets and Spades.

The most keenly contested class was the open craft table, featuring knitting, jewellery, patchwork, needlecraft, woodwork and sculpture. Joint winners were Bob Page with his beach hut made from wood and Elise Clarke with her painting of flowers.

The photography classes also proved popular, particularly the farm category, which required three related photos, won by Anne Fryer.

Daphne added: “A big thank you to all those who entered and hope you will join us next time. Our next virtual show will be on October 10.”
