Civil servant Amanda Harris rode from Shoreham to Guildford and back to celebrate her 40th birthday and says it was beautiful but brutal.

Amanda said: “It was a longer day than I planned – took 11 hours but I did it! I had to stop off at Stan’s Bike Shack in Partridge Green for two cans of fizzy pop just to get me the last stretch home.

“It’s a beautiful but brutal ride and it’s mostly off road. My wrists were the first part of my body to crumble the next day and it took three days to recover.”

Amanda had planned the ride, following the Downs Link cycle path, for Wednesday, August 5, but completed it a day ahead of schedule, as she saw the temperature ramping up.

She said: “It didn’t take me long to get back on a saddle – my husband surprised me with a tandem ride and a picnic for my 40th on the Saturday.”

She decided to do something for the foodbank after discovering project manager Paul Comber is one of her neighbours in Shoreham and he was there to give her an elbow bump of congratulations.
