Special edition of the Herald & Gazette to mark the jubilee

PEOPLE young and old right across the area are preparing for a knees-up like no other to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee.

To help mark the occasion, the Herald & Gazette series has created a special edition – 32 broadsheet pages packed with reports and pictures looking back at the Queen’s reign.

It will mean memories flooding back for many of our readers, including 101-year-old Evelyn Alexander, from Littlehampton, who has seen the reigns of four different monarchs.

For many, the special edition’s crowning glory will be a look back at the Queen’s coronation, from 1953.

Then, the papers published a 16-page supplement, reporting on the celebrations and parties attended by thousands.

In the Herald & Gazette’s special edition, this 16-page supplement is reproduced, in its entirety, from the original newspapers, which are still kept on file, six decades on.

Herald & Gazette group editor Colin Channon said: “We wanted to do something special to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee, and what better way than looking back through our own archives? It was really interesting looking back and seeing how events were covered in the past, and I’m delighted we were able to reproduce the coronation supplement, along with so many other reports and pictures. There’s something for everyone in the special edition. Whether you were around for the previous celebrations or not, it really is fascinating to look back over the past 60 years.”
