For the past three years Rotary members have collected Christmas trees after the festive peiod with the help of Chanctonbury Lions Club as part of a charity fundraiser.

The trees were recycled in an eco-friendly way on an Ashington farm for a donation of £5 per tree.

Trees were to be collected from most of the RH20 postcode area including Pulborough, Storrington and surrounding villages such as Fittleworth, Nutbourne, West Chiltington, Thakeham, Coldwaltham, Watersfield and Amberley.

Rotary project coordinator Anne Fielding-Smith said: “Residents were delighted to avoid all the inconvenience and mess of transporting trees to the tip or burning them, knowing that they had a ‘green’ end use and that a very worthwhile charity would benefit in the process.

“Now we are very sorry to have to disappoint them and the charities we would have helped.”

She said all residents booked into the collection had been advised about the cancellation and been told that Rotary would be willing to collect their trees once the area is lifted out of tier 4 if people were willing to keep their trees in their gardens until then.
