Strongman competitor Krzysztof Radzikowski will attempt to break the heaviest log press record, which currently stands at 230kg, as part of the event on Sunday.

People have an image in their head when they think ‘strongman’ but it’s people’s grandmothers and uncles that are training,” said event organiser Bradley Nichols.

“We’ve got people taking part with regular day jobs - policemen, teachers, and mums - people from all areas and walks of life.”

Cat Smith, competing in the women’s open category, said: “I am incredibly excited to be involved.

“This will be my first competition so there are definitely a fair few nerves mixed in with the excitement.”

The 33 year-old mental health support worker from Brighton added: “Seeing the competition as fun rather than very serious takes the pressure off a little and will allow me more space to access beast mode.”

Cat pointed out that women may feel left out of the strongman sport due to its name.

She said: “It has taken time for me to accept that its perfectly acceptable for a woman to be physically strong and have muscle.”

She described being a strongwoman as ‘liberating’ and said she was proud to be competing.

Meanwhile, this is the third year Cat’s fiancée Polly McGillivray will be taking part. She also wants to raise the profile of the sport to show women what they are capable of.

“It’s a confidence builder for anyone that struggles with body confidence. I hope we inspire others to come and join in,” she said.

Events on the day include a giant dumbbell press, a Conan walk, an Atlas stone load, and a big wheels axle deadlift to maximum weight with the last man or woman standing.

Tegan Simmonds trains the athletes at Max Strength gym, on Southcourt Road, with Matt Szczerbinski.

She said: “The events themselves will be action-packed with a range of competitors, and some first timers - not just huge guys.

“It’s not every day you see these kinds of events and with the added twist of a world record attempt, it’s not to be missed.”

Matt added: “This is going to be a fun day out for anyone; we all like to see people lifting heavy things!”

The event is from 10am to 5pm on the seafront, next to Worthing Pier.
