Hide AdOne award winner in Burgess Hill and three Highly Commendations in Haywards Heath. The Burgess Hill Library (submitted by NewRiver REIT, London) won an Award in the public and community category for the new library, which is part of the £60 million town centre regeneration plans. The judging team commented that the project was “well thought out and an excellent effort, as a solution that will regenerate an entire retail area of Burgess Hill and one that should be copied in town centres”.
The Highly Commended projects included Brooklands Quad (submitted by Bonore Limited, Haywards Heath) which saw the rescue and restoration of a redundant farmyard; the remodelling and extension of a 1960’s memorial hall into the Dream Centre (submitted by Deacon and Richardson Architects, Brighton) for the young people at Chailey Heritage Foundation; and, Sunte Park, a residential development within the grounds of Sunte House, a Grade II* listed building (submitted by Fluid Architecture Limited, Nutley). The site had been closed off from the public for many years, with the development restoring access and opening a large accessible green. The judging team described the project as “a refreshing approach to new house building”.
Chairman of the Sussex Heritage Trust, Simon Knight, said: “This good news story demonstrates the importance of excellent architecture and design, traditional building skills and craftmanship and arguably without these the heritage we have in Sussex would be all the poorer”.
