Volunteers praised for work at Worthing park

The Friends of Marine Gardens have worked with head ranger Anthony Read to conserve and improve the historic 1930s garden, described by Worthing Borough Council as ‘a local treasure’ and a ‘once hidden gem’.

Phil Jones, one of the Friends, said: “Following the end of the first national lockdown, Marine Gardens was to many, particularly the older generation, their first escape from their four walls at home. Many commented what a blessing the gardens have been for them.

“It’s so rewarding to volunteers when members of the public go out of their way and say thank you, and we’re delighted to be in a position to give a little back to the community.”

The park is known for its 18-hole putting green and popular restaurant but the Friends group, which was formed in January last year, has put the focus on the beauty of the planting and allowed the greenery to take centre stage.

Work by the ten members includes litter picking and assisting in providing a colourful and well-maintained haven for all to enjoy.

Edward Crouch, executive member for the environment, said: “Community groups such as Friends of Marine Gardens are so important in maintaining the high quality of our vital green spaces which, we have especially seen this year, play a vital role in aiding the health and wellbeing of residents.

“Working in partnership with the council, their volunteers have continued to care for the public gardens with skill, enthusiasm and dedication, and their efforts are not going unnoticed by the surrounding community.”
