West Sussex fire crews called to help stop 20-hectare blaze in Surrey

Firefighters from West Sussex were called in to help stop a large fire at a beauty spot in Surrey.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said Midhurst fire station provided pumps and off-road vehicles, while Petworth fire department offered a water carrier to help stop a 20-hectare fire at Thursley Common, in Surrey, yesterday (Saturday, May 30).

Midhurst Station 43 said on Twitter yesterday, “43P1 currently on standby at @HaslemereFire while 43M1 attends the incident along with @Gambo1911 as wildfire tactical advisor.”

They later tweeted saying, “On returning to standby we were then mobilised to work alongside crews from @SurreyFRS @Hants_fire @45Petworth at a large vegetation fire at Thursley Common.”

A WSFRS spokesperson said, “Both Midhurst and Petworth crews left at around the same time last night (Saturday, May 30). Midhurst crews were there until about 10.30pm, and Petworth crews were there from 5.10pm yesterday until 10.15pm.”

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service tweeted today (Sunday, May 31) saying, “We are continuing to deal with the large fire and have had reports of people coming onto the Common - please stay safe and stay away from the area whilst our fire-fighting operations continue.”

Surrey Police tweeted yesterday saying, “Thursley incident update: Wildfire units and fire crews continue to carry out fire-fighting operations.

“Twenty hectares involved in fire. Motorists be advised at present the smoke plume from this incident is not affecting the A3. Highways are monitoring. Road closures remain.”
