Mr Shorten was born on May 25, 1920, in Shipley, near Horsham, and now lives at Hollywynd care home, in St Botolphs Road, Worthing.

Jo Calder, administrator, said: “Cyril moved to Hollywynd in February. He loves the home and all the staff, and enjoys talking to them and other residents.”

He said the only thing he disliked about that time was having to wash and shave with cold water.

In January 1945, he married his beloved wife Alma and they settled in Worthing, a town they both loved.

After the war, Mr Shorten went back to work for British Rail.
