The 40th London Marathon on Sunday is a virtual run and James has chosen a route from Worthing Pier to Brighton Pier and back.

Starting his birthday at 60 by running the marathon, James aims to complete it in around 3 hours and 45 minutes, making it his eighth marathon since 1998 and the third time he has run the London Marathon to raise money for Sense.

James was born with Usher Syndrome, a condition which affects sight and hearing, and he was supported by the charity after returning to England from backpacking and running through eight countries in south-east Asia in 2017.

James said: “Sense is a national charity that supports people who are deafblind and those with complex disabilities, to be understood, connected and valued. They are there for every person who faces communication barriers in a world that relies on being able to see and hear well to be connected.

“I had a tough time after returning to the UK from my journey travelling but Sense visited my home, helping me with things like filling in forms. This made me want to give something back.

“Together, we can unlock barriers to communication so no one is isolated, left out or unable to fulfil their potential.”

The virtual 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon allows people to run, walk or jog the 26.2 miles in their local area, making it the most inclusive London Marathon yet.

Richard Kramer, chief executive at Sense, said: “We are so grateful and thrilled that James has chosen to support Sense by taking on the incredible challenge of running the virtual London Marathon. During these challenging times, we need virtual support from you more than ever.

“It’s thanks to people like James that Sense is able to support people with complex disabilities, including those who are deafblind, to communicate and experience the world. Although we won’t be able to cheer him on from the sidelines, we wish James the very best of luck on the day.”
