Worthing students unite against bullying

Ambassadors at St Oscar Romero Catholic School in Goring spoke of serious consequences, such as depression, mental illness and, in some cases, suicide.

Using the national motto United Against Bullying, the school organised a programme of activities for Anti-Bullying Week.

It started off with a whole-school assembly, with all students taking part via Zoom, either from their tutor bases or at home.

A video created by anti-bullying student ambassadors was shown, including strong messages against bullying.

Everyone was encouraged to wear odd socks to highlight individuality and activities were arranged to give the students confidence in speaking out against bullying.

Case studies of victims were discussed and classroom doors were decorated with puzzle pieces containing pledges of support.

Students also created times capsules, envisaging what they wanted the school community to look like in four years’ time. These will be buried on the school grounds and revisited in 2024.

Phil Dean, outdoor learning leader, organised for year-seven students to plant 1,000 crocus bulbs outside the school gates. These were donated by the Rotary Club of Great Britain as part of the Purple4Polio initiative.

Head teacher Pete Byrne said: “The pupils took great joy in being active outside the classroom, helping them grow together as a strong year group.

“When these bulbs bloom in the spring, the students will be reminded of this special day and the Anti-Bullying Week they contributed to, making the school a safe and happy place.”
