CAMPAIGNERS desperate to save a disused school and community hut have launched an e-petition.

Save Our School Site (SOSS) has started a petition on the West Sussex County Council website, calling for the cabinet members for finance and resources and education and schools to retain the old Willows School site and community hut.

Currently, the school and hut, in Irene Avenue, Lancing, are under threat by the county council, which wants the site to be transformed into a housing development.

Although plans were rejected twice by Adur Council, the county council has now gone to appeal.

Campaigners now hope the petition will help enable the action group to protect the site for the community’s use, now and in the future and to stop the development.

Eloise and Gavin Kinshott-Acklan, of Lambleys Lane, Sompting, have written to the planning inspectorate, slamming the council’s decision to go to appeal.

In a letter, they state: “The people of this community are the very definition of Mr Cameron’s big society.

“They are working hard together to hold onto their community while West Sussex wants to take away the very heart of it.”
