For those of us who woke up bleary eyed on Saturday morning after the stunning Olympic opening ceremony, it was a delight to see the sun shining and the saying ‘it never rains in the day of the Flower Show’ once again proved to be true!

Although it was a bit breezy there was a good turnout in the afternoon. Our local MP Amber Rudd judged the Children’s Fancy Dress competition and distributed the prizes at the end. The brass band played and the choir sang and Rod Rolfe raised over £30 by subjecting himself to a barrage of wet sponges as he stood in the stocks.

There was the usual display of magnificent entries for the various classes and awards for flowers and produce in the marquee, many featuring a special Diamond Jubilee theme and delicious cakes on offer in the Tea tent, which did a brisk trade. All over the Recreation Ground dogs and their owners could be seen, each hoping to win a prize in the Fun Dog Show and there was a delightful display from the 1066 Spinners. All in all a good time was had by all, so a big thank you to the organisers and the helpers for putting on such a great show. Roll on next year!
