Mr Herbert joined residents from Walberton as they celebrated the village’s Picnic at the Pond event.

The site has been given a fresh lease of life after being cleared and the areas around it refurbished.

The project was a joint venture between local waste company SITA and Walberton Parish Council. A grant was given to the parish from the SITA Trust’s Enhancing Communities Programme, which supports community improvement projects.

The cash enabled invasive weeds in the pond to be cleared and new oak posts and boards to be put in.

Walberton Parish Council also installed a picnic bench, a children’s bench, information boards and two nesting boxes.

Council chairman Sharon May was delighted Mr Herbert attended the event. She said: “The day proved to be a great success, with participation from many village groups, and money was made for various charities. It was such fun that we may possibly make it an annual event on the village green.”

Mr Herbert said it was a ‘pleasure’ to visit the pond.
